Cuneo served as an official war artist during World War II, which sparked his interest in painting rather than drawing. Terence Cuneo’s original paintings often featured military and engineering subjects, especially trains and railways, although he was also known for fantasy-driven paintings, many of which featured mice.

    Private collection, United Kingdom

Terence Cuneo was an English realist painter. Working in a detailed, illustrative style, he is perhaps best known for his depictions of railways, horses, and military scenes. Cuneo notably received numerous prestigious commissions over the course of his career, including creating paintings of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II and several manufacturing scenes for industrial companies.

Born on November 1, 1907 in London, England, both his parents were also painters—who met in atelier of famed American artist James Abbot McNeill Whistler. Cuneo went on to study at the Slade School of Art and serve in the Royal Corps of Engineers during World War II, and today his work can be found in the collections of the Royal Institution, the Guildhall Art Gallery, and Lloyd’s in London.

Cuneo died on January 3, 1996 in the city of his birth.
